Welcome to second grade! Being a second grade teacher is fantastic. Auburn is a wonderful community and it is great to be a part of it! I hope you enjoy this web page and find it useful throughout the school year.

During the first week of school we discuss the necessary behaviors to create an AWESOME CLASSROOM. Together the children share their thoughts and ideas about making a positive classroom! Here are the acceptable behaviors:
SHARE
LISTEN & FOLLOW DIRECTIONS
BE KIND & HONEST
BE IN CONTROL OF OUR BODIES
BE RESPONSIBLE & RESPECTFUL
HAVE FUN!

The Scott Foresman Reading Program utilizes a variety of resources to excite and motivate children to read and become better readers and learners! I am thrilled to be using this program, as it is fun for children and keeps them active with learning using phonics, listening, spelling, writing, thinking and reading.
Throughout the year we will be doing five units of study in reading. Each unit has five themes. Themes are generally one week in duration, but can sometimes be spread out for two weeks when there are holidays/ days off in the school calendar.
Visit the Scott Foresman site by clicking on this button ![]()
During each theme (usually weekly) your child will bring home a phonics reader to keep and read at home. (These are the paper books that should be stored in the shoebox that is decorated during the first week of school.) Phonics readers will be sent home on Fridays. This reader provides practice with the current skills being focused on in the classroom. When the reader arrives at home it will probably have spelling words from the week circled and have words highlighted that have phonics sounds that have been practiced. The children are invited at the end of the school year to bring their shoeboxes back to school filled with their phonics readers. Owners of filled boxes are rewarded!!
The best way to become a better reader is to read! Second graders should be reading for 20 minutes each day at home. Children at this age enjoy hearing chapter books read to them. Although your child may not be able to read a chapter book independently, he or she can listen while someone else reads the book. This will improve your child’s listening comprehension.
We are currently using the Everyday Math series in the classroom with our daily math instruction. The children complete classroom assignments in math workbooks called journals. These journals provide lesson support material for students to work and solve on their own. During class the children also participate in activities and play math games, which support the concepts being presented in class. Please look for math homework assignments, called Homelinks, in your child’s yellow communication folder. Family Letters will be sent home at the beginning of each new unit. Please keep these letters in the blue parent math folder to use as a reference during the unit.

Communication Folder
Please remember to return your child's yellow
communication folder to school each day. This folder will keep important
notices and completed work organized in your child's bag. It also provides a
place for you to place notes or materials, which you are sending to school.
Homework should be brought to school in this folder. Folders are checked each
morning when the children arrive.
FunBrain-Online
educational games and activities for students.
A Plus Math- A great site to drill math facts.
The best way for you to reach me here at school is to write a note and send it with your child in their communication folder. I prefer a note rather than a voice-mail message as I have limited time during the day to check messages. I check the folders each morning when the children arrive, and I will address your questions or concerns as soon as possible.
Please contact the school office at 483-2769 and leave a message for me and I will contact you as soon as possible.
