Third Grade Class 2010-2011

Literature Groups

Text Box: Dear Parents:

Beginning this year, I will be introducing the students to Literature Groups. Literature Groups will meet once a week and each group will be reading a different book. Roles and assignments will be assigned each week and the students must complete these assignments prior to the next Literature Group meeting. This will require a little more work on the part of each student, but will challenge them in reading.

My Literature Groups consist of six (6) roles. These roles will switch between the students each week and it is their responsibility to determine who will fill each role and also set the reading assignments for the next meeting. The children are allowed to take their books and assignments home and must be prepared for each week’s meeting. Here are the titles and expectations for each role:

Discussion Director – Runs the group by asking questions about something that interested them in the book.

Vocabulary Enricher (FCAT) – Finds words that are hard for them or that may be hard for others in the group and makes them simpler for the group. Writes the words and their meanings to share with the group.

Illustrator – Draws a picture of what they thought of (or pictured in their minds) as they read the book.

Summarizer – Writes a short summary of the book. Remember to include: who, what, where, when, why, and how.

Connector – Connects what they are reading to something in the outside world. Make connections to your own life, what happens at school, and community. You can even make connections to other books that you have read, magazines, or even pictures you have seen.

Investigator – Your job is to dig up some background information on any topic related to your book. This might include: information on the theme, time period portrayed in the book, pictures, objects, music, and/or information on the author.

These roles and requirements have been discussed with each student and group prior to beginning Literature Groups. Books will be chosen based on the students’ Lexile Range. Some books may be at the top of their range while others may be towards the bottom in an effort to accommodate all the students in each group. I will be monitoring each group during classroom time, but if you have concerns at home regarding the demands of the Literature Groups, please let me know and I will make accommodations or move your child to another group.

If you should have any questions, or would like to come in and view the Literature Group books, please give me a call. Thank you for your time and cooperation.
