The first Technology Learning
Activity is to determine the average height of a model rocket flight. The
students work in groups of three or four to a team. They begin the project by
defining 10 words associated with rocketry. The students use a computer
dictionary program to define the terms. The teams will then build 3 or four
model rockets following a set of written instructions. When complete, the
rockets are painted allowing the students some self-expression.
The next step is for the students to learn about the mechanics of model rocket
engines, as well as the safety procedures for launching rockets. Each group
will launch their rockets and the height of each flight is determined using
altitude finders. The results are recorded, averaged and converted from Metric
to English measurement. The final results are recorded and the group turns in a
report
The second Technology Learning
Activity is DeskTop Publishing. The students design and produce a message pad
using computer technology. First they begin by defining 10 vocabulary words
associated with the Graphic Arts industry. The students, again, use a computer,
with a dictionary program, to find the definitions. Next, the elements of
design are learned. Each student then designs a message pad with three
elements: a picture, a border, and writing, which have some common theme. They
must also decide on the size, shape and color of the pad.
Using scanner technology and digital photography, the students are encouraged
to create their own computer graphics. They may also combine two or more
graphic images to make a new one.
The students are also encouraged to use the Paint program in Windows to create
their own computer graphics and borders.
A master print is then generated on the computer. With the approval of their
design, the students print out 25 copies. The copies are then cut to size,
placed in a press and glued into pads.
